Program presented by Sherry Knowlton.
Hydraulic fracturing, better known as fracking, is a controversial topic. The sophisticated extraction process has opened up new sources of natural gas for energy use and has been welcomed by many. At the same time, it has come under fire by environmentalists and landowners for its impact on water quality and other aspects of the environment. Some states and countries have banned the process completely. Here, in Pennsylvania, fracking a geological formation known as the Marcellus Shale has left its imprint, both positive and negative, on the northern and southwestern areas of the state as well as politics in the State Capitol. Local author, Sherry Knowlton, did considerable research about fracking for her novel, Dead of Spring. In this talk, she’ll discuss the pros and cons of fracking and bring attendees up to date on its status in the Commonwealth.
